‘one swallow does not make summer’) is oft-quoted in routine conversation when people talk about how difficult it is for one individual to change things Be it corruption in government system a non-responsive establishment or the establishment’s strong urge to maintain status quo this proverb is normally quoted to indicate that solitary effort is as good as futile in terms of challenge Former Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav and BSP chief Mayawati Agencies In the aftermath of Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) massive win in the recent Assembly election in Uttar Pradesh all other political parties are slowly coming to realise that their solo efforts to challenge the monolith that the BJP has turned into are akin to the attempts of a single grain of chana (gram) to shatter the furnace in which it is roasted After initial grumblings at the factors which these major parties thought led to their rout they are now resorting to a favourite pastime among out-of-power parties in Uttar Pradesh – form a grand alliance to defeat the single biggest party in power Till 2013 the efforts of such parties was directed against the Congress especially after the surprising victory of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in the 2009 Lok Sabha election But after the BJP’s big win in the 2014 General Election the parties have found a common enemy in the BJP And it is no surprise that all such initiatives have their roots in UP In the last nine years (since 2008 to be precise) attempts have been made under the leadership of either the Samajwadi Party (SP) or the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to project their leaders – then Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mayawati respectively – as leaders of national stature who could lead a united front of opposition and Left parties to defeat the UPA Mulayam and Mayawati have hosted a number of dinner or lunch meetings in Delhi to discuss such grand alliances which could project a non-Congress front led by either of them as prime minister Significantly the BJP or the Congress never used to be a part of such confabulations The parties which usually participated in these meetings were Trinamool Congress Janata Dal (United) Rashtriya Janata Dal Janata Dal (Secular) Telugu Desam Communist Party of India Communist Party of India (Marxist) and some others Since then both SP and BSP have considered themselves as being capable enough alone to challenge and uproot any big party from power And if by any chance either party cannot achieve this then this is bound to happen if they come together – or this is what enthrals politicians and political observers alike A half-step towards realising the coalition politics in Uttar Pradesh was taken prior to the recent election when SP joined hands with the Congress and forged an alliance that gave far more seats to the Congress than the party had won in state elections in the last 27 years As a result the tally of both parties fell to a new low Since then gestures are being made to include Mayawati’s BSP into the fold that already has SP and Congress in it The SP initiated the coalition talk and the Congress and BSP have made accommodating noises Those propagating this grand coalition as a sure-shot way to stop the BJP refer to the arithmetic of vote share in the 2014 and 2017 election It is argued that the BJP’s vote share has changed only marginally while the SP and BSP have almost retained their share Therefore if the SP BSP and the Congress join hands their combined vote share will be much higher than that of the BJP and therefore the BJP will be left biting the dust The vote share or percentage formula appears very convincing as a piece of statistics but then experience shows that voting takes place on emotive and social issues rather than on statistics Voters’ loyalty changes and so does the candidates’ profile In many constituencies where the BJP stood second or third in 2012 the party has made past the winning post in 2017 A wave an undercurrent or a personality can sway an election in far more convincing manner than the vote share of the party that stood second in terms of vote share in the previous election SP founder Mulayam has been quick to oppose son Akhilesh’s attempts to build a grand alliance saying that the SP alone is capable of meeting the challenge of the BJP Even if he does not clearly give out the reasons for believing this the coalition initiative does not have answers to the complicated caste and community equations in the state Having Rahul Gandhi Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati in one coalition may send conflicting signals to OBCs Dalits Muslims and other Hindu sections It also does not clearly spell out who will lead the proposed coalition Or is it that SP hasdecided this issue with Akhilesh leading the SP-Congress coalition and expects BSP to accept it In this context is there a hidden significance behind the elevation of Anand Kumar in the BSP hierarchy The coalition debate is sure to rage on in the coming months for the SP BSP and Congress have been pushed to the margins of the political scenario in Uttar Pradesh and this debate gives them a reason to remain relevant a former MNS MLA who was seen as Thackeray’s point person in Nashik and was instrumental in building the party’s base in the city." mean age is still around 26 years and it is set to remain young for decades yet In most other countriesespecially in democraciesmuch younger leaders routinely take office On averagethe presidents and prime ministers of BritainChinaFranceRussia and the United States are in their mid-50s India has such veneration for older politiciansnobody bats an eyelid that the average age in cabinet is now a stately 65 yearsthe same as it was before last years reshuffle supposedly infused younger blood Sonia Gandhithe Congresss kingmakeris 66 Even chief ministerswho are supposedly the countrys more dynamic leadersshare a not-so-sprightly average age of 62 Youthfulness is not a virtue in itself And assuming good healthsufficient energy and an open mindthere is nothing intrinsically problematic about the elderly being in charge But gerontocracy is not popular elsewhereand probably for good reason Unless you turn to long-serving African despots (Zimbabwes Robert Mugabefor example) or Gulf princesmost countries prefer their leaders younger It has not always been so in India: Indira Gandhi was 48and her son Rajiv Gandhi just 40when they each got into high office And of course either Modi or Rahul Gandhirelative youngsterscould be prime minister next But a general case exists that elders dominate in India Could that yet explain a series of problems Take the level of economic growth tolerated in India This has now fallen below 5 per centfrom a high point of nearly 10 per cent That is a dismally low level for a country that has a booming populationpowerful internal drivers of growth and many obvious policy changes that could be taken to restore confidence and investment Given what should be expectedthe current rate of growth feelsin effectlike a recession Why is there not more anger about this Just possibly elderly leadersthose who recall the longslow decades when Indias economy crept along barely faster than its population grewfeel that the current situation is no great a disaster Younger leadersby contrastshould be far more impatientaware that a failure to grow now brings immense lost opportunities laterespecially for the young The chance to eradicate poverty in a generation is being thrown awayas growth is allowed to slide A younger leader of any party who felt more closely connected to the tens of millions of Indians without jobsmight feel more pressure to do something quickly about this Or note how Indias MPs are ageing progressivelywith more elderly in the house and fewer youngsters than during parliaments in previous decades It could be coincidence that Parliament looks more toothless than of oldand sits for fewer days than ever before Indeedit may be that the most dedicated parliamentarians (and hardest working ministers) are among the oldest But wouldnt a livelyyoungermore demanding generation of MPs hold their rulers to greater account Now and then Indias youth raise their voices The protests in Delhiin December and Januaryover the dreadful lack of safety for women in India were particularly striking Throngs also turned out to support of Anna Hazares anti-corruption campaign Indias youth are also increasingly vocal online I see livelyarticulate and at times aggressive comments on my Economist articles each weekmany of them written (I believe) by young Indian readers But where is the Indian political leader who will try to tap their strengthas Barack Obama inspired a generation in America Rahul Gandhis efforts to rejig the structure of the youth wing of Congressand his vague talk of broader institutional reformmust leave a generation of youngsters cold He or other young leaders should be putting arguments forward about how firms and entrepreneurs can create productive jobs for young Indians For now the masses of disaffected youths are mostly left in villageslittle connected with urban India But the next decade or two will bring tens of millions more of them into the citiesdemanding productive jobscleaner airproper housing and consumer goods Many of themwith luckwill become demanding voters too At the same time those in villages will grow far more aware thanks to phonestelevision and the will be remembered for generations to come Apart from Bollywood Tanvi has also done some commendable work on TV with Mirza Ghalib Jeevanrekha Rao Saheb Family No 1 to her credit The powerhouse performer is back on the small screen as she stars in &TV’s Vani Rani Playing the titular roles the actor will be seen playing two different characters in the daily show In an exclusive chat with indianexpresscom Tanvi opened up on what got her back to television the changing trends regressive content and what worries her when she takes up a role Excerpts from the interview: Q What made you come back to the small screen The show itself It just pulled me into it I am really kicked about getting a chance to play double roles Apart from being an actor I also enjoy all aspect of filmmaking To be able to get a firsthand experience of how a project with dual roles is being made is really fascinating Both the characters Vani and Rani are diametrically opposite and yet connected by a thread And getting a chance to do something like this is amazing Q In a time when young faces are in demand we are seeing a middle-age character as the lead What’s your take on this I was very clear that if I do TV I will be the protagonist for I know such parts are written and watched Compared to films television is easier to handle in such scenarios So many things are happening in a show that you will get help from other characters too Also TV has an immense reach If your content is strong you are safe as you know it will find its own audience somehow Q The show apart from you has a comparatively new set of actors Do you feel you will have added pressure riding on your shoulders I never thought about it until someone told me this But I don’t think its any kind of added pressure on me for as an actor I give my everything to make the show look good I don’t get into the number games but I make it a point to do everything to help my project do good Q As an actor do you have a checklist when it comes to taking up shows I have always chosen to be part of shows that stood out from the rest Be it Lifeline Mirza Ghalib or even Family No 1 I don’t have a problem if the show is turned upside down owing to the rating business but I have a major issue if my character gets regressive We are trying to bring a clean wholesome comedy and I hope things work out as we have planned That’s the only thing I get worried about Q So did you have this clause in your contract Oops No I did not (laughs out loud) I think I should have Q The show projects the tale of twin sisters who are not on talking terms Do you feel such scenarios exist in real life It is rightly said that truth is stranger than fiction Recently I heard a similar story from a unit member and realized that there is so much of this happening around us Although it’s a daily we are trying to push some buttons that can give out subtle social messages that are the need of the hour We are not here to preach but such stories need to be told Q You’ve always played strong women roles the latest being Bajirao Mastani Radhabai was a very strong woman the real strategist behind Bajirao and I wish there could have been more of her in the film Q Lastly are there any other projects in the pipeline Hello I am not even getting time to scratch my head for now I hope all our combined efforts get synergised and this turns out to be a successful project Produced by Essel Vision and GTN Entertainment Pvt Ltd Vani Rani is an adaptation of a popular South show of the same name It chronicles the lives of middle-aged twin sisters who
